Heathens

Oh, what wonderful heathens we were!

Dancing on nights with no clothes by the moon.

By the stars,

By the dark,

By the outlines of things:

That we loved,

That we love,

That we burned.

It was then that we could,

It is now that I can.

It will be that I will, and I will.

It’s a challenge to dance on your own without light,

Without seeing the tips of your feet.

But because we’ve danced so many times in the night,

In the memories my rhythm completes.

I can dance without looking,

Run my hands through the breeze,

And I feel my soul in the air.

In the moon,

In the stars,

In the night,

In the day,

In the sun

With the world bright and fair.

I am still dancing,

And dancing I’ll keep,

What a wonderful heathen I am!
